ROCKWELL COLLEGE UNION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - May 16th 2005

The 80th Annual General Meeting took place in the parlour at Rockwell College on Monday May 16th at 7.30 pm. This is the 4th year that the AGM has been held in the College. This change was made to facilitate the College President and Fr Billy Cleary who traveled to Dublin for the monthly meetings throughout the year and in recognition of the need to have some of our events Tipperary based. We wish to record our appreciation of their support and the support and hospitality of the community in Rockwell.

The meeting was given a comprehensive report on another very successful year for the Union. Membership has grown, the website is continuing to expand, events held were very successful and well attended, with AIB Corporate Banking sponsoring the Business Lunch and Anglo Irish Bank sponsoring the Annual Dinner.

A total of € 45,000 was presented to the College President Fr Billy Cleary by our President Billy Murphy.

Our outgoing President welcomed the election of John Duffy (Class 1978) as incoming president and wished him well for the coming year. The meeting also elected Robert Gallagher(Class 1979) as Vice President and Jim Holmes (Class 1976) as Second Vice President. The Governing Body for 2005-2006 was elected.

ROCKWELL COLLEGE UNION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - May 18th 2004

The 79th Annual General Meeting of the Rockwell College Union took place in Rockwell College on the 18th May 2004. 25 people attended the meeting and dinner in the College afterwards.

During the meeting the outgoing President Patrick Curran (Class 1975) spoke of the enjoyment he gained from his year as President, and thanked the Governing Body for all their hard work during the past twelve months. He also paid a special tribute to Fr. Downes C.S.Sp. and Fr. Broderick C.S.Sp. for their continuing support of the Union, and in particular thanked them for their attendance at the monthly Governing Body meetings in Dublin.

The incoming President Billy Murphy (Class 1977) expressed his appreciation at being nominated President of the Union. He said that he felt it was a great honour and that he is looking forward to the year to come and hoped that it will be as successful as the year gone by. He then remarked that the Union and College both owe the outgoing President Patrick Curran a great debt of gratitude for his outstanding achievements as Union President during the year.

The meeting then proposed and elected John Duffy (Class 1978) as Vice President of the Union, Robert Gallagher (Class 1979) as Second Vice-President. The Governing Body of 2003/2004 was re-elected for 2004/2005. Tom Madigan (Class 1983) was re-elected as Honorary Treasurer, Angela Quinlan (Class 1998) as Honorary Secretary and Jim Holmes (Class 1976) was elected as Honorary Membership Secretary.

Fr. Broderick addressed the meeting and thanked the Governing Body, and especially Patrick Curran for the tremendous work done during the past year. He also expressed the College’s appreciation for the donation of €45,000 made by the Union to the College Redevelopment Programme. The funds will be used on the classroom furniture project, which will result in about half the classroom desks being replaced in the College before the new academic year in September. Fr. Broderick then assured everyone that he would stay in contact with the Union next year and in the future after he has completed his term as President of the College, which ends in June next.

Fr. Downes was also presented with a cheque from the Union at the AGM for €1,500, which is to be donated to the cause for Canonisation of Bishop Joseph Shanahan CSSp, a former student of Rockwell College. Fr. Downes thanked the Union and assured everyone that the donation was greatly appreciated.

The evening was very enjoyable and as former President Bernard Flusk remarked, the great energy and enthusiasm that is present in the Union at the moment was clearly visible and augurs well for the future of both the Union and the College. Our thanks to Rockwell College for their hospitality on the night, which was as usual top class.

ROCKWELL UNION ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING - May 27th 2003

The 78th AGM of the Rockwell College Union took place in the College at the end of May and was well attended. Outgoing President Brian Goff (Class 1976) reflected on an excellent year where membership had increased and the various Union functions in Cork (Dinner), Dublin (Business Lunch and Annual Dinner) and Boston (American Dinner) had been hugely successful and had seen increased numbers attending all functions. The Union Diary, with information including events held by both the Union and College during the year & contact details for past pupils, continues to be a much sought after accessory and was fully subscribed by past pupil advertisers this year . He also commented that it was pleasing to note that on the evening of the Annual Dinner, a past pupil, who wishes to remain anonymous, donated a cheque for EUR50000 to Fr. Broderick to assist in the development of the College. The President, Brian Goff, then presented Fr Sean Broderick with a cheque for EUR3500 from the Union which is to be used in a College Project and a further cheque for EUR1500 which is to be used for a Missionary Project.

Fr Broderick acknowledged receipt of both cheques and advised that the College cheque would be set against new equipment for the Home Economics Laboratory that will be fitted out during the summer months. The Missionary Project cheque will be sent to a Holy Ghost Priest in Kenya who runs a mission in a very remote part of northern Kenya and they are urgently in need of funds to maintain the mission. Commenting, on the donation received at the Annual Dinner, Fr. Broderick advised that the College were expending a considerable sum in refurbishing the gym over the summer, including new floor, ventilation system, etc, and the donation of EUR50000 would fund part of these works.

Brian Goff then handed over chain of office to the new President of the Union, Patrick Curran (Class 1975). The new President expressed his appreciation at being elected and in his opening address advised that it was his hope that the Union would continue to build on the excellent work done by his predecessors over the past few years and to build on the success of the Union thru increased membership, attendance at the Business Lunch, Annual Dinner, etc. The incoming President then referred to the ongoing redevelopment of the College, which for a College the size of Rockwell, is something that is constant and demands the support of the Union and all past pupils of the College. It is his hope that the year ahead will forge even closer ties between the College and the Union and the President undertook, with the College through Fr Broderick and Pat O'Sullivan (Principal) and a small Committee comprising ex Presidents Brian Goff, Andy Butler, Jerry Quinn & Fergus Ahern to embark on a fund raising programme to assist the College in their redevelopment programme. Details will be announced in the Autumn.

The AGM then elected Tipperary past pupil Billy Murphy (Class 1978) as Vice President and John Duffy (1978) as Second Vice President. Both are graduates of UCD and Billy, a former Student of the Year, is Managing Director of Drury Communications in Dublin and John, a former Irish Universities & Leinster Inter-provincial Rugby player, is a Chartered Accountant with KPMG in Dublin and a former Honorary Treasurer of the Union. Tom Madigan (Class 1983) & Aisling Gildea (Class 1993) were re-elected Honorary Treasurer and Honorary Secretary respectively and Brian Kavanagh (Class 1982) was elected Honorary Membership Secretary - Full details on members of the Governing Body can be obtained elsewhere on the Union Website.

An interesting past pupil in attendance at the AGM was Gregory Charles Lyder, formerly from Trinidad but now based in Aruba, Caribbean, who attended Rockwell from 1961 -1965 and had not been back in Ireland, never mind the College, since he left in 1965 ! He regaled those present with his stories of Rockwell and of his fond memories of Frs Aidan Lehane, Nolan and Mullins and assured all present that he would not leave it as long to visit again !
