Fr. Ronan White

Dear Brendan,
Greetings from a still wet and hot mozambique. There shold be about another month of rainfall and then we wont see any untill next december. Things here are going well and im more or less fully recovered from the malaria, but another of the other spiritans here in the house is now in bed with it.

As promised Brendan, please find attached a few photos of the land which we acquired, with the Rockwell PPU donation, for the construction of our central house and postulancy. It is about 2 hectares in size so it was dificult to give an idea of the overall look of the land. But the photos should give an idea of the tpye of terrain and location.

We had, would you believe it, an earthquake here two nights ago. i slept soundly through it, but one of the other lads felt it and said the house was shaking quite violently. The other lad says he felt it too, but we cant trust him as he's delerious at the moment with malaria... It was relatively minor and, although a number of shacks were destroyed, it appears that no-one died thank God.

That's all the news from this end for the moment Brendan. I hope all is well back in ireland and that it's beginning to warm up a bit.

Warm regards,
Ronan.

Union Donations fund new desks for College

Fundraising represents an integral aspect of the Rockwell College Union's work and in this regard, the Union has established a fund to assist the College in pre-determined capital expenditure projects. This year, the College needed to replace large numbers of classroom desks. The Union provided €40,000 to the College to acquire 180 new double desks and for the refurbishment of existing desks.

The College currently has an ambitious development programme planned to enhance the learning and sporting facilities (including the construction of an all weather multi purpose pitch). Once approved, the development programme will require a significant investment. This investment is imperative if Rockwell is to maintain it's position as a leading second level establishment. Past pupils of Rockwell can play a very important role in contributing to the development of the infrastructure of the College today and over the years to come.

Pictured above are current Union President Mr. Billy Murphy and current Principal of Rockwell College, Mr. Pat O'Sullivan.

Union donate EUR 45,000 to College for Development Programme

At the recent Union AGM held in the College, outgoing President Patrick Curran presented a cheque for EUR 45,000 from the Union to the President of the College Fr. Sean Broderick C.S.Sp. The funds are to be used for the Rockwell College Development Programme which will see various development projects undertaken in the College over the next few years. The funds received this year will be set against the class furniture replacement programme and will see 50% of all classroom desks replaced before the commencement of the new academic year in September 2004.

Other projects to be undertaken include development of new classrooms, upgrading of the library and dormitories, upgrading of computer room , etc, and the development of a modern IT lecture & presentation theatre, called the "Union Room". It is hoped the later project will be taken on by the Past Presidents of the Union who will be asked to contribute towards this project.

The Union are committed to working closely with the College in assisting with the development of Rockwell College. The funds raised this year are the result of both the increasing popularity and awareness of the Union and its functions which together with increased membership has resulted in the Union being in a position to make a generous donation to the College and also a direct approach to a small number of individuals who have donated funds to the development programme in the College.

Following a request for financial assistance, the Union also made a donation of EUR 1,500 to The Cause of Canonisation of Bishop Joseph Shanahan CSSp, a former past pupil of Rockwell College.

The college actively seeks donations in relation to missionary work. Details will appear shortly in relation to missionary projects.
