Rockwell College opens new Hall of Residence

On 30 August 2005, the College welcomed its first year boarding students to a new accommodation facility, ‘The Shanahan Hall of Residence’. This building is the former Agricultural College, which has been renovated and modified to accommodate boarding students. Following the arrival of all boarders the facility now accommodates 116 boarding students.

The official opening of the Hall of Residence was celebrated on Sunday, 11 September 2005. This began with a Mass in the College Chapel followed by a re-dedication of the building and a blessing performed by the Provincial, Fr Pat Palmer. This was followed by a reception in the new Hall of Residence with members of the Community, Staff and Union Governing Body present.

Mr Frank Fitzgerald has been appointed as the Director of the Hall of Residence. The building is an excellent addition to the College facilities and highlights the progressive nature of the College.

Union Donations fund new desks for College

Fundraising represents an integral aspect of the Rockwell College Union's work and in this regard, the Union has established a fund to assist the College in pre-determined capital expenditure projects. This year, the College needed to replace large numbers of classroom desks. The Union provided €40,000 to the College to acquire 180 new double desks and for the refurbishment of existing desks.

The College currently has an ambitious development programme planned to enhance the learning and sporting facilities (including the construction of an all weather multi purpose pitch). Once approved, the development programme will require a significant investment. This investment is imperative if Rockwell is to maintain it's position as a leading second level establishment. Past pupils of Rockwell can play a very important role in contributing to the development of the infrastructure of the College today and over the years to come.

Union arrange Career Guidance Evening in College

The Rockwell College Union Career Guidance evening took place in the College in April last. Fifteen past pupils from diverse career backgrounds and geographical locations attended the evening and spoke to approximately 100 5th Year students, offering advice and general career guidance, both on a group and individual level. Gerry Rockingham (Class 1992) now a Dublin based recruitment consultant was the guest speaker for the Union at the start of the evening.

The feedback from both the College and the students was that the evening was a phenomenal success and as part of a two part career guidance service provided by the Union (the other part being the mock interview session held in the College last November) the response from pupils and teachers was one of great appreciation and optimism.

To all past pupils who so generously gave of their time to take part in the evening many thanks and to Governing Body members of the Union Clodagh Beresford (Class 1991) and Jim Holmes (Class 1976) a special thank you for arranging both events in the College during the year.

Union make presentation to the College

The Rockwell College Union presented a montage of the 5 Holy Ghost Colleges in Ireland, painted by Fr. Alo Flood C.S.Sp., to the College at the recent Munster Dinner held in Limerick. Accepting the montage from the President of the Union Patrick Curran, Fr Sean Broderick, President of the College, thanked the Union for the gift and commented that it will take pride of place in the College.

Rockwell Scores… With GOAL and AidLink (March 11th 2004)

This week Rockwell College along with three other schools have packed and distributed no less than 150,000 St Patrick's Day badges to 6,000 newsagents around the country. It is hoped to raise at least €180,000 for GOAL and Aidlink.

"Most of the money raised through the St Patrick's Day badge project goes to projects to help street children in Calcutta, Angola, Sierra Leone, Kenya and Mozambique", explains Lisa O'Shea of GOAL. "It also helps the students involved to relate to the projects that they are supporting".

As well as learning about issues in the developing world, Rockwell students are getting a healthy dose of enterprise education as they organize, manage and market a major national campaign. They must visit as many schools and businesses as they can to network and sell the idea of the badges and the causes they support.

Most of the work involved takes place outside school hours, so students are required to make a personal commitment to the project.

The St Patrick's Day badges have been on sale in newsagents and other businesses since Monday 8th. Rockwell students will be on the street selling the badges on Tuesday and Wednesday of next week.
