GOLF
Golf Report - Union Cup 14 July 05
The golf went very well at the Grange on Thursday 14 July and Templeogue again suceeded in pipping Rockwell to retain the Union Cup. Rockwell was represented by Morgan Pierse and Phelim Moylan who had 40 pts. and Peter O'Connor and Henry Bolger who after an impressive front nine faded for 35 pts.
The meal and drinks were splendid and as it was just after the golf everyone stayed on. Robert Gallagher ably substituted for the Union President John Duffy and Templeogue are organising next year. It is hoped to increase the number of participants per team as it is a good opportunity to get together.

RUGBY
Leamy leads Ireland to Triple Crown glory in Twickenham
Ireland won their 8th Triple Crown with a stunning victory by 28 - 24 over England in Twickenham and former Rockwell schoolboy Denis Leamy (Class 1999) made an outstanding contribution with an all action performance against the English from his position at No 8 . Leamy scored a brilliant individual try to compliment the two tries from Shane Horgan as Ireland completed their 6 Nations with victories over Italy, Wales , Scotland , England and the narrow defeat to France. The Union congratulate Denis on his outstanding contribution to the Irish XV during the season and he now joins a very distinguished group of former Rockwell past pupils in the Ryan brothers ( Triple Crowns 1898 and 1899 ), Bertie O'Hanlon ( Triple Crowns 1948 and 1949 ), Willie Duggan (Triple Crown 1982) who have won Triple Crowns with Ireland .
It was also a good weekend for another past pupil as Connacht Interprovincial hooker John Fogarty (Class 1995) played a significant role in the Ireland ' A ' victory over England |'A' at Gloucester by 33 - 18 prior to the senior international at Twickenham. Meanwhile, John's brother Denis (Class 2002), also a hooker, and second row Mark Melbourne (Class 2002) have been gaining invaluable experience with the Munster XV in the Celtic League during the 6 Nations Tournament and as Munster continue their preparations for their forthcoming European Cup Quarter - Final against Perpignan .
Fogarty makes European Cup debut for Munster
Former Irish Under 21 hooker Denis Fogarty (Class 2002) made his European debut for Munster when he replaced Jerry Flannery in Munsters recent 42 - 16 victory over Castres in Thomond Park. Fogarty, a former Irish Schoolboy International and Munster Schools Senior Cup winner with Rockwell in 2001, has made a number of appearances for Munster in the Celtic League but the Tipperary man came on from the bench to join Irish International Denis Leamy (Class 1999) in the all conquering Munster team, and thereby made his European debut , in the recent Heineken European Cup game with Castres. Much is expected of Fogarty and he is widely tipped as a player of enormous potential and promise for the future.
Leamy has also been selected on the Irish Squad for the forthcoming Autumn Internationals against New Zealand , Australia and Romania and he will be looking to add to the 3 International caps he received last season following his debut against USA .
It completed a memorable weekend for the Fogarty brothers with Denis brother John (Class 1995) playing hooker on the Connacht XV that recorded a hard fought 19 - 16 victory over Montpellier in the European Challenge Cup in France. Unfortunately, Brendan O'Connor (Class 2001), who has featured regularly in the back row for Connacht this season , was injured the previous weekend in a Celtic League game and unavailable for selection. (November 1 2005)
O'Connor heads to Hong Kong 7's with Ireland
Former Irish Under 21 International Brendan
O'Connor (Class 2001) has been selected on the Irish Squad
to compete in the Rugby World Cup Sevens in Hong Kong over the weekend
of 18th - 20th March . The Connacht & Cork Constitution flanker
will be making his debut for Ireland in International Sevens in
this tournament where Ireland are drawn against Sevens kingpins
New Zealand, Scotland, Tonga, Korea and USA.
Rockwell Boys head for the Eternal City...
Two former students of Rockwell College took centre
stage in the opening games of the 2005 6 Nations Championship in
Rome. The Irish Management selected Tipperaryman Denis Leamy
(Class 1999) at open side wing forward for his second cap
on the Irish XV for the game against Italy in Rome. In a tough forward
contest , Leamy who is having an outstanding season for Munster
in the European Cup, played his part as Ireland came home winners
by 28 - 17 and scoring 3 tries in the process but the game only
swung Irelands way in the final quarter.
In the Under 21's 6 Nations Championship played in Udine, last year's
Under 21 World Cup finalists got off to a winning start and Garryowen
second row forward Mark Melbourne (Class 2001)
played his part in a well deserved 33 - 12 defeat of Italy.
Fogarty and O'Connor start to make their mark
Last year's Irish Under 21 stars Denis
Fogarty (Class 2002) and Brendan O'Connor (Class
2001) have started to make their presence felt in senior
representative rugby with their recent selection for important Celtic
League and European Cup games. Hooker Fogarty (Cork Con) has forced
his way into the Munster panel and played in two recent Celtic League
games for Munster whilst O'Connor (Cork Con) made a winning debut
at wing forward for Connacht in their recent Parker Pen European
Cup match in France against Grenoble. The former Rockwell students
will be hoping to push their claims for selection for their provinces
next season having had a taste of senior interprovincial rugby this
season.
Leamy selected for Ireland XV
Former Rockwell schoolboy Denis Leamy
(Class 1999) becomes the twenthieth past pupil of the College
to be selected to play for Ireland when he was selected on the Irish
XV to play USA in Lansdowne Road on Saturday 20th November.
The 22 year old Tipperaryman follows in the footsteps
of many distinquished past pupils who have represented their country
at the highest level, starting with the Ryan brothers in 1897 and
including Triple Crown winner Bertie O'Hanlon and former British
& Irish Lions Michael English and Willie Duggan.
Leamy started playing rugby in his local club
Cashel RFC but it was in Rockwell that his career really progressed
and he played a starring role as No 8 on the JCT winning cup team
in 1997 and then played 3 years on the SCT, the first at Centre
before reverting to his favoured Back Row position where he played
2 years on the Munster & Irish Schools XV and toured Australia
with the all conquering Irish Schools Team.
After school he played with UCC RFC and the Munster
and Irish underage teams before joining Cork Constitution RFC this
season. He is a full time professional rugby player with Munster
and is very much the man in form this season, forming an impressive
Munster back row, which includes former Wallaby World Cup winner
Jim Williams and Irish No 8 Anthony Foley, in their Celtic League
and European Cup Campaigns.
On behalf of the Rockwell College Union, his
former Coaches, the Priests, Teachers and all past pupils , we offer
Denis our sincere congratulations on his selection for Ireland and
our very best wishes on his test debut and hope he will have a long
and distinquished career in the green jersey .
Munster Schools start defense of Interprovincial
Championship
Reigning Schools Interprovincial Champions Munster

Ulster Schools. Rockwell centre Marcus O'Driscoll
and wing Patrick Thompson have been selected on
a strong Munster Schools XV and three other members of the SCT are
included in the squad to travel, prop C Canning, back row K Roche
and S O'Dwyer.
Rockwell boys selected to tour England with
Munster Schools
Following trials for the forthcoming Schools Interprovincial
Rugby series, the Munster Selectors have chosen a touring party
of 26 to travel to England in October to play two matches against
Worcester Colts U 19's and Gloucestershire Schools. Four members
of the SCT have been selected - centre Marcus O'Driscoll,
wing Patrick Thompson, prop Courtney Canning
and back row forward Killian Roche - and following
the tour the Selectors will then pick the Munster Schools XV for
the first Interprovincial match against Ulster Schools in Belfast.
The Munster Schools are the defending Schools Interprovincial Champions.
McNaughton takes over at Leinster
Former Irish International Paul McNaughton
(Class 1970) has been appointed Manager of Leinster Rugby
with direct responsibility for the Leinster Senior XV and the Leinster
Development Teams. A former Munster Schools Interprovincial, he
was on the SCT winning team in Rockwell in 1970 . A gifted sportsman,
on leaving school he played League of Ireland football with Shelbourne
FC where he played in the European Cup and represented the League
of Ireland Internationally whilst also playing inter county gaelic
football for Wicklow. On his return to rugby he won Leinster Senior
Cup and League medals with Wanderers RFC before joining his home
club Greystones RFC who had gained Senior Club status. He was an
ever present on the Leinster Senior Interprovincial XV that won
four Interprovincial Championships in a row and won 18 caps for
Ireland in the centre between 1978 and 1981.
McNaughton , a Banker by profession , is a former
Chief Executive of Deutsch Bank in Ireland and brings a wealth of
experience to the position of Manager of the Leinster Team where
he teams up with former PBC old boy Declan Kidney who has also recently
been installed as Coach of the Leinster Team - the Leinster Branch
and their supporters will be hoping that this combination of Munster
experience will restore Leinster Rugby to winning ways in both the
Celtic League and European Cup.
Former Rockwell Star Denis
Fogarty is hero in Under -21 World Cup Semi-Final
Denis Fogarty (Class 2001) scored
a try when playing as hooker in Irelands under-21 win against Australia
in the Under-21 World Cup on Wednesday 23rd June. The former Rockwell
College schoolboy has made a huge impressionin this tournament and
before that in the Six Nations. Strong and aggressive in the loose,
he is equally at home fulfilling basic duties. We wish Denis the
best of luck in the Final on Sunday against New Zealand.
Rock Boys take Ireland to World Cup Final
Ireland reached their first ever World Cup Final
when the Irish Under 21's made history by becoming the first team
from the Northern Hemisphere to reach the final of the IRB Under
21 World Cup in Scotland. Congratulations are due to two former
Rockwell students, Denis Fogarty (Class 2002) and
Brendan O'Connor (Class 2001), both with the Cork
Constitution club, who were ever present in the Irish team victories
over Tonga, Argentina, France and then Australia in the Semi - Final
. Wing Forward O'Connor received the Man of the Match Award in the
game against Tonga while former Irish Schools International hooker
Fogarty rowed in with a try against Australia. Both men played in
the Final against New Zealand and whilst the Irish XV were beaten
by the All Blacks, they can proudly take their place in the history
books as being part of the first Irish Team to play in a World Cup
Final. (June 2003)
UCC Under 20's are All Ireland kingpins
University College Cork took their third All -
Ireland U20's Championship following their victory over Belfast
Harequins in Dublin recently. Crucial to the success of the University
side was former Irish Schools International prop forward and Munster
Schools Senior Cup Winner Jim Mackessy (Class 2002)
who played his part in the Munster Clubs 38 - 13 victory which gave
UCC the 2004 Championship and a triumph to add to their wins in
1996 and 2002.
Shallow selected for Irish Schoolboy XV
Congratulations to Leaving Certificate student
Peter Shallow who has been selected on the Ireland
Schools XV to play Wales in Donnybrook at the beginning of April.
The flying winger, part of the Munster XV that won the Schools Interprovincial
Championship title before Christmas has been in top form for Rockwell
and Munster all season and fully deserves his selection. He becomes
the 19th student from Rockwell College to have been selected to
represent Ireland at this level since International Schools rugby
was introduced by the IRFU in 1975 . The Rockwell College Union
wish Peter every success in the forthcoming Internationals against
Wales, France and England and the summer tour to Australia.
Rising Stars show their Mettle
Following their tough opening 6 Nations match
with France in the Under 21's Championship, the Ireland Under 21's
came good against a strongly fancied Wales to keep alive their Triple
Crown prospects. Playing a key role for the Irish side were former
Irish Schools International Denis Fogarty Class 2002
(Cork Con) at hooker and back row forward Brendan O'Connor
Class 2001 (Cork Con).Unfortunately O'Connor has been ruled
out of selection for the forthcoming English game due to ankle injury
but Fogarty will lead from the front row.
Another former Irish Schoolboy International and recipient of the
Union Award for Sportsman of the Year at Prize Day last year, Cian
McNaughton Class 2003 (Greystones RFC) has been selected
on the wing on the Ireland Under 19's XV to play England. The match
is part of the teams preparations for the upcoming Under 19's World
Cup in South Africa next May.
McHugh calls Test time
Past pupil Dave McHugh (Class 1973)
, Ireland's most capped referee with 29 Test appearances, has announced
his retirement from the International scene. McHugh made his debut
in 1994 in the match between Romania and Wales and refereed his
first 5 Nations Championship the following year in Paris when France
played Scotland. He also took charge in two European Cup Finals
and officiated in the World Cups of 1995, 1999 and 2003. His final
international appearance was in the recent Calcutta Cup match last
February in Murrayfield. "Scotland against England in the 6
Nations is as important a match as there is in Test rugby and I
feel it is an appropriate time for me to finish", he said.
McHugh will now concentrate on the development, training and coaching
of referees in his recently appointed position as a referee development
officer with the IRFU.
Shannon retain Munster Crown
Congratulations to former Captain of the SCT John
Hadnett (Class 1997) who assisted Shannon to victory in
the Munster Senior League Final recently against Cork Constitution.
In a rather tense match Shannon came home victorious 21 - 9 and
retained the League Cup . Both teams are well placed in the AIL
Premier League going into the final games of the season and Rockwell
College is well represented on both sides with John Hadnett appearing
for Shannon and members of Rockwell's Munster Schools Senior Cup
winning team of 2001 starting to make their mark for Cork Con with
Denis Fogarty, Brendan O'Connor
and Dara Lyons making the Cork Con squad and featuring
in the AIL . Captain of the Cork Constitution Under 20's, Frank
Quinlan and Morgan Lyons are other young
players currently making their mark in Cork Constitution and expected
to break into the senior team in the near future.
UCD secure Colours win
University College Dublin claimed their eight
successive win over arch rivals Dublin University at a packed Donnybrook
in the 52nd Annual Colours Match played in the week before Christmas.
Rockwell boy Patrick Hickey-Dwyer played a staring
role in the centre for UCD in their 25 - 18 win over Dublin University
who are this year celebrating their 150th birthday as the worlds
oldest continuously playing rugby club.
Munster Schools bring home Interprovincial Title
Congratulations to the Munster Schoolboys Rugby
Team who regained the Schools Interprovincial Championship following
excellent victories over Leinster in Dublin (17 - 15) and Ulster
in Limerick (19 - 13). Leaving Certificate student Peter
Shallow played his part in both victories and rowed in
with a try against Ulster to give Munster an early lead in this
hard fought interprovincial which secured the Championship for Munster.
Leamy blow for Munster
One of the rising stars of Munster Rugby, Denis
Leamy (Class 1999) suffered torn cruciate knee ligaments
during Munsters Celtic Cup semi final against Scottish side Edinburgh
. Former Irish Schools International Leamy, who was part of the
Munster Squad that reached the European Cup semi final last year,
will be out of action for the remainder of the season. Everyone
in both the Union and College wish Denis a speedy and full recovery.
Rockwell Boys lead Munster Under 21's to Inter-provincial
Title
Three past pupils of Rockwell played a key role
in guiding Munster to the Under 21 Inter-provincial Championship.
Barry O'Connor (Cork Con) captained the team and
was ably supported by Mark Melbourne and Ronan
Brosnan (both Garryowen), all from the Class of
2001. Munster recorded home and away victories over Leinster,
Ulster and Connaught to claim the title and congratulations are
properly due to all three individuals... well done!
McHugh to take charge at Rugby World Cup
Corkman David McHugh (Class 1973)
has been selected as one of two referees from Ireland to officiate
at the Rugby World Cup in Australia. McHugh is widely regarded as
one of, if not the best, referee in the world at present and will
be officiating in his third World Cup having participated in the
1995 (South Africa) & 1999 (Home Countries & France). The
Union wish David every success in the tournament.
College confirm appointment of new Coach to SCT
The Principal of the College, Mr Pat O'Sullivan,
has confirmed the appointment of former back row forward Frank
Fitzgerald (Class 1990) as the new head coach to the Senior
Cup Team in the College. Frank, who attended Rockwell as a boarder
from 1985 - 1990 played both JCT & SCT whilst in school, was
capped at Munster Schools Interprovincial level and has the distinction
of playing on the first Irish Schools team to win the Triple Crown
in 1990. A former Connaught Interprovincial, he won an AIL Division
1 Winners Medal with St Marys RFC in 2000 whilst working in Dublin.
Following his return to Tipperary, he coached Clonmel RFC and has
completed the IRFU Level 1 & 2 Coaching Courses which are run
in conjunction with the International Rugby Board. Frank will be
assisted by Tony Smith, a teacher in the College, who will manage
the side and brings a wealth of experience to the position having
been part of the management team that successfully guided the SCT
to Munster Senior Cup victory in 2001. Tony will also continue as
Selector for both the Munster Schools Interprovincial Team, where
he is Chairman of Selectors, and as an Irish Schools Selector. The
Union wish them and the SCT every success in the year ahead.
Rockwell Boys get I.R.F.U. Contracts
Former Irish Schoolboy Internationals
Denis Leamy (Class 1999) & John Fogarty
(Class 1995) have signed full time professional IRFU contracts
with Munster and Connacht respectively. UCC student and back-row
forward Leamy represented Ireland Under 21's last year and Fogarty,
a versatile hooker who can also play in the back row and who has
won an AIL Championship with Cork Con RFC, was part of the Munster
Squad this year but has now moved to Connacht on a full time IRFU
contract.
